Primitive Walking Safari
A fully immersive, multi-day walking safari in unfenced Big Five wilderness. Guests carry their own equipment, sleep under the stars, and move through the landscape on foot with no fixed camps or permanent facilities.
A True Primitive Trail
The Manukuza Primitive Trail is a minimum of three nights and four days, designed for guests seeking a raw and authentic wilderness walking experience. Longer trails can be arranged depending on availability and conditions.
There is no base camp and no set route. Each day unfolds on foot, guided by the landscape, wildlife movements, and the conditions encountered along the way.
The Manukuza Primitive Trail
On the Manukuza Primitive Trail, guests explore Big Five wilderness on foot in remote areas of either the Balule Nature Reserve, which forms part of the Associated Private Nature Reserves (APNR) within the Greater Kruger ecosystem, or the Greater Makalali Nature Reserve.
Guests carry a light load and allow the bush to guide the journey, tracking animals and navigating through the landscape to carefully selected overnight sleeping spots.
A Typical Day on Trail
- Morning departure: Breaking camp at first light and continuing on foot.
- Interpretive walking: Tracking, ecology, and reading the landscape.
- Midday rest: Pausing in shade during the heat of the day.
- Afternoon walk: Moving on to a new overnight location.
- Primitive overnight: Fire, shared meals, and sleeping under the stars.
Life on a Primitive Trail
Nights are spent sleeping under the open sky in unfenced wilderness. Camps are temporary and minimal, centred around a small fire and shaped by the conditions of the environment.
All participants take turns on night duty, keeping a quiet watch around the fire. Two armed, FGASA-qualified professional trails guides accompany the group at all times, sharing their knowledge while maintaining overall safety and oversight.
Trails operate on a self-catering basis. Guests bring their own food and equipment, with cooking done on provided gas stoves. Participants should be in good physical health and comfortable hiking several kilometres per day with a backpack.
