Trails Guide Mentorship Programme
Manukuza offers structured Trails Guide mentorship and observer hour opportunities for individuals working toward FGASA Trails Guide qualification. These programmes are conducted during real walking trails in areas with free-roaming dangerous game.
Mentorship is provided by experienced, FGASA-qualified Professional Trails Guides, ensuring that hours are logged in a practical, authentic guiding environment.
Who Can Apply?
- Individuals aiming to become FGASA Trails Guides
- Candidates needing to complete observer hours
- Apprentice Trails Guides working toward mentored and workplace hours
- Guides seeking experience in Big Five walking environments
Observer & Apprentice Trails Guide Requirements
Apprentice Trails Guides are required to complete a combination of observer hours, mentored hours, and workplace hours in accordance with FGASA requirements.
- Observer Phase: A minimum of 100 logged hours on trail, including at least 40 dangerous game encounters.
-
Apprentice Trails Guide Programme: A further 100 hours consisting of:
- 50 hours as 2nd Rifle under a qualified mentor (minimum of 20 encounters)
- 50 hours as 1st Rifle with the mentor acting as 2nd Rifle (minimum of 20 encounters)
- Workplace Hours: An additional 50 hours as 1st Rifle with guests (not in a training context), logging at least 10 encounters from a minimum of three animal categories.
Mentorship & Guiding Structure
During all trails, an approved FGASA Professional Trails Guide or SKS (DG) Guide functions as the mentor, back-up guide, and the legally responsible guide in charge of the trail.
Logging of 1st and 2nd Rifle hours is interchangeable. Apprentice Trails Guides do not need to complete all 2nd Rifle hours before commencing 1st Rifle hours, allowing for flexible progression under supervision.
Mentored hours may be accumulated during guiding-based activities, FGASA-endorsed courses, or during wilderness and backpacking trails in areas with free-roaming dangerous game.
Professional Standards & Safety
All mentorship and training activities are conducted in accordance with FGASA standards. Trails are led by accredited, armed Professional Trails Guides with extensive experience in Big Five wilderness environments.
Safety, situational awareness, and ethical guiding practices form the foundation of Manukuza’s mentorship approach.
FGASA Affiliation
Manukuza operates in alignment with FGASA training frameworks and assessment requirements. For official qualification standards and documentation, candidates are encouraged to consult FGASA directly.
