The Story Behind the Olifants Wilderness Trail
Tucked along the winding bends of the Olifants River in Kruger National Park lies one of South Africa’s most iconic walking experiences: the Olifants Wilderness Trail. Established in 1979, it followed closely on the heels of Kruger’s first trail, Wolhuter, and marked a shift from traditional game viewing to true wilderness immersion. This transformation was guided by visionary conservationists like Magnus Louw, whose belief in walking as the most authentic way to connect with nature helped lay the foundation for Kruger’s wilderness trail legacy.
The Olifants Trail was never about luxury or checklists. It was, and remains, about presence. About slowing down, reading the land, and experiencing the bush on its own terms. Each trail is shaped by the instincts of experienced rangers and the rhythm of the wild itself: the hush of elephant tracks, the call of a lilac-breasted roller, the scent of wild basil drifting on the wind.
Today, decades later, the trail’s spirit endures. While some operations have evolved, the essence remains untouched, raw, grounding, and deeply real. For many, walking Olifants is more than an activity; it’s a rite of passage. A tribute to the wild, and to the people like Louw who understood that to protect nature, we must first walk alongside it.

Where is the Olifants Wilderness Trail?
The Olifants Wilderness Trail is set in the heart of the Kruger National Park, in a remote area east of Letaba Rest Camp. Letaba serves as the meeting point for trailists, located approximately 51km from the Phalaborwa Gate.
It is about a 1.5 to 2-hour drive, depending on sightings and road conditions. From Letaba, guests are transferred by open safari vehicle to the secluded trail base camp, tucked deep within Kruger’s rugged wilderness.
This area teems with biodiversity, where the Olifants and Letaba Rivers merge before continuing their journey into Mozambique. With its dramatic river gorges, sweeping open plains, and views of the distant Lebombo Mountains, it’s no wonder this landscape is perfect for immersive walking safaris.
It brings to mind the wilderness of Manukuza, our own untamed sanctuary, where guests regularly encounter an impressive variety of wildlife, including Big Five species, all experienced on foot. Manukuza offers that same raw, elemental magic, enhanced by flexible routing, deeper wilderness access, and the kind of intimate wildlife encounters that keep seasoned trailists coming back.
If you’ve experienced the magic of Manukuza, you’ll recognize the same wild spirit in this landscape. And if you haven’t yet walked with us, this trail offers a glimpse of the raw, immersive adventure that awaits at Manukuza, perhaps even sparking your next journey into the heart of the wild.
