Wolhuter Wilderness Trail
In 1904, Harry Wolhuter’s harrowing encounter with a lion became the stuff of legend—a tale of courage, resilience, and the indomitable spirit of Africa. While patrolling near the Olifants River in what was then the Sabi Game Reserve, Wolhuter and his loyal dog Bull found themselves suddenly in the grip of danger. As dusk settled over the dry riverbed, Bull’s insistent barking, initially dismissed as a reaction to nearby reedbuck, proved to be a life-saving alarm.
Without warning, a lion leapt from the tall grass. Though Wolhuter spurred his horse into a gallop, the predator struck with blinding speed, knocking him down and sinking its teeth into his shoulder. In a desperate struggle for survival, Wolhuter managed to draw his knife and slash at the attacker, injuring it enough to force a retreat. Severely wounded yet determined, his survival not only cemented his place in local lore but also inspired generations of rangers who would follow in his footsteps.
Today, the spirit of that legendary encounter lives on along the Wolhuter Trail—a route celebrated for its high game density, iconic granite koppies, and raw, unspoiled wilderness. Hikers and nature lovers can traverse the very rugged landscapes once patrolled by Wolhuter, immersing themselves in both breathtaking scenery and rich history.
At Manukuza Wilderness Trails, we honor these iconic paths by crafting unforgettable, camp-based adventures throughout Greater Kruger.
